The seeds of Safe’s growth.
While working on a geospatial forestry data sharing project in British Columbia, co-founders Don Murray and Dale Lutz saw the challenge to be solved firsthand. The need to exchange data across different systems and organizations existed, the solution didn’t. Cue the creation of Safe Software.
Growing into a world of possibilities.
Don and Dale began developing a prototype of what would later become FME, our software platform that connects people, organizations and entire enterprises through what was once incompatible data. Today, we’ve grown into a thriving business with hundreds of employees and tens of thousands of customers worldwide.
Over 30 years in, and we’re just getting started.
It’s hard to believe we’ve been at it since 1993. Especially since we feel like we are just getting started.
From Past to Present:
30 Years of Safe Software Growth.
1993
The dawn.
Safe begins its 30 year journey to industry innovation and introduces FME.
1997
Starting the partner network.
Safe brings in one of its first VAR partners, Esri Sverige, marking the early years of the Partner program.
1997
Safe’s first sale outside of North America.
FME was adopted by Sweden’s National Land Survey (NLS), marking our first international sale and establishing us as a global company.
1998
A (web)page right out of the 90s.
Our first webpage showcased our name everywhere!
1998
Taking on the trades.
With a website and brochure in-hand, Safe was introduced to the world at tradeshows.
2006
The first of many.
Safe’s first FME Conference attracted GIS users and spatial data managers from 16 countries. We’ve had six more (and counting) since.
2009
The UNEP invites Safe to join Proteus.
Safe joins the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP-WCMC) to aid in global biodiversity conservation.
2014
Safe embarks on FME World Tour.
The FME World Tour visited over 45 cities worldwide and provided a series of events to give users of all skill levels a chance to discover FME’s capabilities.
2018
From spare rooms to more rooms.
Safe launches its brand new building in the heart of Surrey, BC.
2019
Navigating the pandemic.
Safe rapidly shifted to a fully remote working environment during the pandemic, continuing to deliver support and maintain collaboration.
2022
The Peak of Data Integration.
After a five-year wait due to the pandemic, we were eager to welcome back hundreds of FME users in person at the #FMEUC22 in Vancouver, BC.

One of BC’s fastest growing companies.
Safe was featured on the BIV Top 100 Fastest Growing Companies List, which celebrates the region’s top-performing businesses.

Customers’ Choice for Data Integration.
Safe was named Customers’ Choice in Gartner Peer Insights ‘Voice of the Customer’ for Data Integration tools, the only vendor recognized as North America Customers’ Choice!
